    Description

1916-D Mercury Dime, AU58 Full Bands
    Ideal Collector-Grade Example

1916-D 10C AU58 Full Bands PCGS. CAC. As the unequivocal key date and mintmark of the series, the 1916-D was minted in small quantity and slipped by largely unnoticed during the excitement over the much higher mintage Philadelphia introductory issue, struck late in 1916. It would be the 1930s and 1940s before collectors took serious aim at the 1916-D, by which time most of the mintage was well-circulated.

This example is an exception. Minimally marked silver-gray surfaces show only a brief period in circulation before this near-Mint 1916-D was rescued from a pocket or till. The horizontal and diagonal fasces bands are unabraded and sharp, and both sides show a natural speckling of bluish-gray patina that deepens at the borders. The CAC label adds an important endorsement.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 23GY, PCGS# 4907)
