1916-D Mercury Dime, MS64 Full Bands
    Denver Key, Seldom Offered Finer

1916-D 10C MS64 Full Bands PCGS. CAC. The Mint ushered in a replacement for Chief Engraver Charles Barber's Liberty Head dime design in 1916, with a winged-cap motif by German-born sculptor Adolph Alexander Weinman. The winged cap's similarity to that of the mythological messenger of the Roman gods, Mercury, has led to the Mercury dime moniker.

The inaugural coinage of the Mercury dime at Denver in 1916 was cut short by sudden demand for quarter dollars, which forced the Colorado branch mint to shift its resources away from the smaller denomination. Only 264,000 Mercury dimes were struck at Denver in 1916. This key date is highly sought-after in all grades, but especially in Mint State with Full Bands definition. The near-Gem offered here is CAC approved and well-struck. The lustrous surfaces have a hint of light golden toning.(Registry values: N4719)
