Description

Charles III copper 1 Grano 1769 XF45 Brown NGC, KM-PnC1, Calico type 193, #1870. NGC has listed this piece as 1/2 Grano on the holder, but a look at the reverse shows Go on the left side of the arms and "I" on the right side. Well struck, with even brown patina. Definite wear is shown on the bird's breast and the edges exhibit noticeable marks. Definitely a I Grano, as the 1/2 Grano shows "1/2" on the reverse. An interesting coin, with most of the information about it pure speculation. It is rather obvious that it was produced at the Mexico City mint, as the obverse has Mo on either side of the date. The bird atop a cactus may be the first appearance of this image on Mexico coins. The denomination "Grano" stems from the "Go" on the reverse of the coin and this seems an obvious meaning for "Go," but there is no definitive information on that subject. Normally listed as a Pattern in most references, it is possible that this was a type meant for circulation, as most of the few known examples show signs of wear. In any event, this type, and the corresponding 1/2 Grano of virtually identical type, are extremely rare and along with a 1768 1/16 Real (2 Maravedis) the first Mexico copper issues.
