Charles III gold 4 Escudos 1765 Mo-MF AU Details (Mount Removed) NGC, Mexico City mint, KM141, Fr-30, Cal-321. Extremely rare "Rat-Nose" issue of Charles III, one of apparently only five to six confirmed examples of the date. Gerber lacked this 4 escudos type as a whole, while Norweb owned a single 1764-dated piece. The presence of a mount removal upon the 12 o'clock area of this piece is essentially inconsequential in the face of its rarity, especially considering the probability that all other examples now reside within permanent collections, given their fairly recent dates of sale. The known examples are as follows:

- The Ex. Newcomer-Eliasberg specimen (Stack's April 2005, lot 3148), AU55 NGC
- The Ex. Glendining specimen (June 1937, lot 363), XF40 NGC
- The present piece, AU Details NGC.
- A cleaned AU example (MDC Monaco November 2018, lot 1041), AU Details NGC
- A plugged VF example (Ponterio & Associates January 2011, lot 115)

The plaster cast mold of the specimen plated in Burzio (Diccionario de la Moneda Hispanoamericana, Vol. 3, plate LXI, No. 443) appears to be the Newcomer-Eliasberg specimen. If not, it would represent the sixth example known to the cataloger. Additionally, one example of this date was lot 1434 in the Lonja del Almidón March 1936 sale, but was not plated. The likelihood is high that this coin is the same as one mentioned in our previously-detailed census.
