Description
Contraband Gold Ship Spike, likely from the 1715 Fleet, 8.8 inches long, weighs 142.2 grams or 4.57 oz. About 11 karats. An ingenious way to transport contraband back to Spain. This gold spike would be used by replacing an original spike from the ship, probably in the captain's quarters. He would insert the gold spike and put pitch over the head to conceal it. When the ship cleared port, the spike would be taken out and the original was put back in. A very interesting item!More information about Mexican Coins. See also: Mexico World Coin Nationality.
