Awe-Inspiring "Caballito" Pattern Peso

Estados Unidos silver Proof Essai "Caballito" Peso 1909 PR66 Cameo NGC, Paris mint, KM-Pn179, PL-03A. By C. Pillet. Incuse lettered edge. Commissioned by Porfirio Diaz to mark the centenary of the Mexican War of Independence, the task was assigned to Charles Pillet in Paris, who subsequently completed the work for the 50 Centavos and Peso denominations. Earning the nickname "caballito," or little horse, Pillet's beautiful design has since become a favorite among collectors as the type marked a distinct shift in style in Mexican coinage, eschewing the usual indicators of mint location, fineness, and assayer initials. While uncirculated examples of business strikes are hotly contested, patterns and off-metal strikes are considered holy grail pieces among specialists, with so few struck, let alone appearing on the market. The example here is ethereal and unforgettable, offering exquisite underlying pastels that enrich the magnificent Proof Cameo finish. Each and every element of the raised devices stands in sharp contrast to the pristine fields, allowing the eyes to catch the strike-doubling surrounding the reverse eagle motif. An example worthy of even the most bombastic superlatives and demanding a premium bid.
