Description
Attractive Gold Bar from the Atocha Wreck
Gold Bar recovered from the Nuestra Senora de Atocha shipwreck. Struck four times with traces of Royal tax stamp, twice with karat stamp "XXI". 566.1 grams (or 18.2 ounces) of 21.75 karat gold. Accompanied by certificate of authenticity. It is wider than the usual finger bars. The Tierra Firma Fleet sailed from Havana on September 4, 1622, bound for Spain. The fleet of 28 ships carried massive amounts of gold, silver, emeralds, and pearls. Shortly after leaving Havana, the fleet sailed into a hurricane. Eight of the twenty-eight ships were lost at sea, and the eight that were lost, carried a majority of the treasure aboard. The Atocha sailed at the rear of the fleet and carried the vast amount of the treasure.
Mel Fisher and his crew searched for 16 years before finding the main wreckage of the Atocha on July 20, 1985. This was, at the time, the greatest shipwreck treasure ever discovered.
