Philip IV Counterstamped "Royal" 4 Reales 1658 Mo-P XF (Holed), Mexico City mint, KM-Unl., Cal-689 (Extremely Rare), Cay-6161 (this coin), cf. Sedwick-M18a. 13.37gm. Unknown assayer. Displaying what seems to be a Type II Guatemalan counterstamp from 1839. Supremely rare and wholly appealing, the devices fully expressed with even notable hints of die polish visible in the protected regions alongside a healthy dappling of golden luster. Notable as a most uncommon denomination within the series--the Standard Catalog of World Coins does not even record "Royal" 4 Reales for Philip's reign--we have not been able to locate a single other 4 Reales coming to auction in recent years, although a 1643 was present in Norweb and a 1639 in the Fonrobert collection. Moreover intriguing as an unrecorded host for this Guatemalan countermark, and certainly a specialist's coin by every measure.
