    Description

Choice-Certified 1714 Cob 8 Escudos from the 1715 Plate Fleet

Philip V gold Cob 8 Escudos 1714 Mo-J MS63 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM57.3, Cal-2212, Onza-396 (Few specimens known), Oro Macuquino-396. 27.02gm. Type with date on reverse, and GRAT obverse legend. From the 1715 Plate Fleet. A classical Cob from colonial Mexico owing both to its relatively early date and the accompanying association with the famed 1715 Plate Fleet, Calic├│ stating that only a few specimens are known in his book, La Onza. While the luster of the surfaces has been mildly muted owing to its noted time spent underwater, this has done nothing to hamper the coin's natural appeal, die polish still remaining quite prevalent, and the struck detail retaining a great amount of clarity for the type and series more broadly. A better appreciation of the offering's original resplendence can be gleaned from the reverse, where flow lines are easily visible even without the aid of magnification, this accompanied by a clear and full date to wit. Among the finest representatives we have had the privilege to handle, with just two specimens ranking finer at NGC.
