Description

Philip V Milled 4 Reales 1733 MX-MF MS63 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM94. An extremely rare one-year issue with MX mintmark. Representatives from this colonial series are rarely found in higher grades,  rendering Mint State examples conditionally scarce; the present specimen, however, goes beyond this to seem almost prooflike in appearance. Its surfaces are exceptional, absolutely free from hairlines or contact marks, toned a moody gray-gold on the obverse and with a slightly lighter argent luster on the reverse. The strike could not be sharper, giving high-relief to the iconic obverse pillars and reverse shield. Tied for finest certified by either NGC or PCGS; the Rudman and Norweb piece, an MS62 also certified by NGC, realized a hammer of $24,000 in our 2016 ANA auction (sale 3048, lot 31081). Of higher grade and sublime eye appeal, this stunning piece can hardly go unnoticed by specialist collectors of Latin American coinage.
