Description
Republic copper Specimen Pattern Centavo 1841-Mo SP45 PCGS, Mexico City mint, KM-Pn60, Guttag-3183, Buttrey/Hubbard-41. Lettered edge. Coin alignment. By Luciano Rovira. A somewhat enigmatic Pattern for the first proposed decimal coinage of Mexico, minted 23 years before the Pesos/Centavos system was first introduced under Emperor Maximilian. Buttrey and Hubbard note that while the coin is around the size of an 1/8 Real, its creation during this period makes little sense within the contemporary monetary system of Escudos and Reales. Nevertheless, it would seem as though the issue likely circulated on par with its sister denomination, this piece being mildly worn, though the level of detail that remains points towards a sharp original strike.Ex.
