Description

    An Important Diez Pesos!

Republic gold 10 Pesos 1880/79-MoM, KM413.7 type but this date unlisted, AU58 NGC, an extraordinary Mexican rarity as a date, 1880 being simply skipped in Krause, with the elusive 1879-MoM being given nothing but "lines" for values in all grades. On this wonderful coin, the entire 1880 date is sharp with the second "8" being boldly engraved over the clear remnant of a "7" while the "0" digit shows a ghost beneath, vague but strongly suggestive of a "9" mostly buffed off the working die. Importantly, we can locate no recent records of the appearance of the 1880 date, our only informative reference noting the sale of a "BU" specimen in April of 1937. The "AU58" grading designation of this piece suggests to us the possibility that the two coins are one and the same, for any wear on this specimen is more imagination than reality, the high points of the designs showing no wear; we see only slight disturbance to the luster in the fields, now frequently interpreted by the grading companies as being signs of some circulation. Here the designs are struck boldly, the Balance Scales just about fully detailed, and the obverse showing a deeply detailed eagle and cactus, as well as a clearly defined eye and mouth on the captured snake. The rims are consistently high, and the inner beading of the rims is sharp as well. The luster is fairly reflective, toned over by ages of oxidation of the fragile gold metal, now showing a pleasing light yellow cast. Clearly, this is both an exceptionally well-preserved gold coin, and a major rarity within the Balance Scales series. Just 1 or 2 known.
