Description

Republic Hook Neck 8 Escudos 1823Mo-JM, KM382.1, type 1, XF45 NGC, nice feathers on the eagle and strong overall strike. A very popular issue, the gold 8 Escudos struck at the Mexico City mint in 1823 is the only gold coin featuring the "Hookneck" eagle. Specialized authors Hubbard and O'Harrow state the following about the scarcity of this coin: "...the dies for the 8 Escudos (in 1823) were not completed and ready for striking until December 4th leaving only 27 days for coinage. Reported estimates that only two dozen of the eight Escudos exist today cannot be confirmed, but the number of advertised sales would fit with that estimate."
