Republic silver Specimen Pattern 50 Centavos 1889 Mo-AM SP62 PCGS, Mexico City mint, KM-Pn151 var. (listed in white metal), Buttrey/Hubbard-54 var. (same). By all indications an exquisitely rare early Mexican fractional Pattern, produced just after the turn of the First to the Second Republic. As the nation at this time was transitioning from a Reales to a Peso standard, a new series of Cap and Rays Patterns featuring a redesigned eagle was proposed in 1889 for the coinage from the 5 Centavos through the 20 Pesos. These pieces appear to have only been documented in white metal, with the Liberty Cap motif only being formally adopted on the Peso coinage struck for circulation in 1898, this motif otherwise not seeing use on minor or gold denominations, which instead saw the introduction of the balance scale type. According to the best of our knowledge, only one other example of this Pattern is known in silver--currently certified SP63 by PCGS--with none of the other denominations in the series documented in silver. Missing from both the Norweb and Gerber collections, and of immense interest as such.
