Description
An Incredible Gold "Money Chain" from the Santa Margarita
temp. Philip III gold Santa Margarita Shipwreck Recovery "Money
Chain" of 4 troy lb 9.54 troy oz ND (circa 1620), Comprised of
407 solid, 24 carat gold links, each weighing approximately the
same as a Spanish 2 Escudos. Measuring 10 feet in length, and
weighing 57.55oz (1789.8 grams). It is hard to imagine that a
heavier gold "money chain" exists. An incredible piece of shipwreck
history that appears entirely unparalleled both in terms of its
size and unavoidable intrigue. Almost certainly the same chain that
Mel Fisher is pictured holding on page 183 of the book Sunken
Treasure: Six Who Found Fortunes by Robert F. Burgess, this
piece was previously on loan to Mel Fisher's Museum in the Florida
Keys. We last offered this item in our 2009 May Long Beach sale,
where it realized an incredible $115,000.Ex. Heritage Auction #3005 (May 2009, Lot 22091)
