Possibly Unique 1864 Custer Third Cavalry Variant, Uncirculated
1864 Custer Third Cavalry Badge. Uncirculated Uncertified. Phillips, page 108. Silvered brass. Plain edge. 35 mm. Somewhat reflective surfaces. The obverse of this B.J. Hayward medal has a highly detailed and realist portrait of a uniformed, mustachioed, and longhaired George Armstrong Custer, facing two-thirds left, within an olive branch. The reverse is lettered in 13 lines THE HISTORY OF THIS WAR WHEN TRUTHFULLY WRITTEN, WILL CONTAIN NO BRIGHTER PAGE THAN THAT UPON WHICH IS RECORDED, THE CHIVALROUS DEEDS, THE GLORIOUS TRIUMPHS OF THE SOLDIERS OF THE THIRD DIVISION CEDAR CREEK 19 OCT. 1864. G.A. CUSTER.The battle of Cedar Creek took place near Winchester, Virginia, and resulted in a decisive Union victory. The present piece is closely related to the Civil War Patriotic token field, and is extremely desirable. While most known examples have a suspension loop, this piece was clearly produced without a loop. The edge is intact with no evidence of loop removal. As such, it may be unique in this metal, perhaps intended as a pocket piece rather than a suspension medal.
