Description

Uncertified 1942 Mint Set. The U.S. Mint did not sell mint sets to the general public prior to 1947. But an intrepid collector in 1942 received a mostly complete mint set for that year by writing the Treasury Department and paying $2.98, which covered the $2.68 face value plus a mail charge of 30 cents. The one-page letter Mint receipt accompanies the lot, and includes the name and address of its original owner. The set includes Uncirculated PDS examples of the cent, dime, quarter, and half dollar, plus the Type Two 1942-P and 1942-S nickels. The 1942-S cent, dime, quarter, and half dollar all have trumpet tail mintmarks. No Type One nickels were included. The silver coins and nickels display deep peripheral toning.
