Description

1792 Privately Issue Cent Restrike, Judd-Appendix C, Pollock-6001, High R.6, VF 30 Rim Nicks. Struck in copper by Dr. Montroville Dickeson sometime during the 19th century. The obverse displays an eagle perched atop a half shield and was probably intended to be used for stamping revenue paper circa 1797-1817. The reverse carries the wording TRIAL PIECE DESIGNED FOR UNITED STATES CENT 1792. Dickeson marketed this design as a possible motif for the government's 1792 pattern cents because he found the dies among discarded Mint equipment. The original obverse design is credited to Adam Eckfeldt, one of the contributors to the 1793 half cent. This example of this curious and scarce restrike displays moderate wear, as if it was kept as a pocket piece, and a few areas of planchet roughness, especially at the rims, and one large rim bruise on the reverse.
