Description

1796 MEDAL Castorland Medal, Gold MS60. 24.34gm. The Paris Mint continues to produce restrikes of these medals, which bear edge-stamping reading ARGENT for silver, OR for gold, CUIVRE for copper, and BRONZE for bronze. This piece bears the OR stamp on the plain edge along with what appears to be the cornucopia stamp along with the number 3. The original pieces have an unbroken reeded edge. This example displays a thin die crack extending from the rim near the last A in AMERICANA that curves down to the top of the lettering and then returns back to the rim near the I in COLONIA. A small area of rim and edge damage appears to the left of the Paris Mint stamp near the M in FRUGUM on the reverse.
