Description
1843 Proof Set Modified Original Case
Ex: Pittman
1843 Modified Case for a 10-Piece Proof Set. An original
case for a seven-piece 1843 silver and minor proof set, modified by
John Jay Pittman to include the three proof gold coins of that year
in the lid (thanks to Dave Steine for this information). When David
Akers cataloged the 1843 proof set in the Pittman sale, he noted
the differences in appearance between this case and the original
case for the 10-piece gold, silver and minor proof set in the Amon
Carter catalog, but did not mention Pittman's alterations. The
purple velvet-lined lower interior, with recessed settings for the
dollar, half, quarter, dime, half dime, cent, and half cent, and
the Morocco leather-bound wood exterior are original. The lid
contains newer recessed settings for the eagle, half eagle, and
quarter eagle, with different blue and white ribbon pulls. Pittman
obtained the three gold coins first, at the Memorable Sale in 1948.
A few months later, he purchased the silver and minor proof set
from Judge Joseph Sawicki and modified the case to hold all the
coins. The eagle, half eagle and quarter eagle from the set are
offered in individual lots in their respective sections of this
catalog. Case measures 179 mm x 87 mm (no coins included).Ex: Judge Joseph Sawicki; John Jay Pittman; Pittman Collection, Part I (David Akers, 10/1997), lot 832; Sil DiGenova and Mike Storeim; Ken Goldman and Mark Yaffe; Blanchard & Co.; Joan Zieg Steinbrenner.
