Description

1901 Morgan Dollar Obverse Die
No. 16, New Orleans Shank Punch

1901 Morgan Dollar Obverse Die, Uncertified. 49 mm diameter (at the base), 46-51 mm depth. The bottom of the die is unevenly cut in relation to the face. The die face clearly shows the date (1901) and PLURIBUS UNUM with the stars, but Liberty's face and the adjacent border stars are effaced by corrosion, possibly at the Mint. The entire surface of the die is rusted, similar to what is seen on dies dug out of the ground. On the side of the shank is punched "No. 16" with an O mintmark punch below, indicating the 16th obverse die intended for shipment to the New Orleans Mint. Identifying the VAM of this die seems impossible, but we are sure the winning bidder will have ample opportunity to make an attempt. Morgan dollar dies are quite rare at auction, especially obverses. This one, although rusted, is not canceled as most Morgan dollar dies are. In this respect, it is a quite rare offering.
