Description
Preliminary MacNeil Sketch for the Reverse
of the Standing Liberty Quarter
Plated in Burdette
Preliminary Reverse Sketch for the Standing Liberty Quarter.
5 in. diameter. A preliminary rough sketch by Hermon MacNeil for
the reverse of the Standing Liberty quarter. The eagle flies to the
right in an oblique view within a plain circle without the various
border legends seen on sketches from later revisions. This sketch
was never progressed into a more refined iteration like many others
were. It came to Eric P. Newman by 1960, from John A. Coughlin, who
saved it among with other similar sketches from Hermon MacNeil's
estate studio after the sculptor's death. Some of the material
Coughlin preserved is now in the Smithsonian Institution. An
initial group of MacNeil sketches for the reverse of the quarter
was offered by Heritage in 2016.Ex: Hermon MacNeil; John A Coughlin; Eric P. Newman (c. 1960).

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
