Description

British Colonial Rupee 1888-H, KM5, SP64 NGC, normal bold strike, attractive and reflective silvery gray surfaces. The Heaton Mint struck some 94,000 "business strikes" or pieces meant for commercial use (in just this one year) in this exotic colonial outpost administered by the Imperial British East Africa Company, an Arabic trading center for centuries that became, like neighboring Kenya, one of the important British African colonies that appealed to all sorts of homeland adventurers, for whom coins such as this were intended. The exact mintages of the far rarer Specimens, also the Proofs, does not seem to be known, but they are the ultimate examples of this long-gone coinage.
