Description
Impressive 1878 VAM-44 Dollar, AU58
The King of Morgan Varieties
1878 7/8F $1 Weak AU58 PCGS. VAM-44, A Top 100 Variety. Most
specialists will agree that the VAM-44 and the late die state
VAM-44A 1878 Morgan dollars are the most important die varieties in
the entire series. The cotton blossoms and leaves are tripled
(tripled die obverse), and the eagle's legs are doubled (doubled
die reverse) on this combination variety. We offered a different
PCGS AU58 example of this variety in our January 2008 FUN sale, a
coin that realized $12,075 and we offered an MS62 PCGS coin at our
2007 ANA sale, which realized $20,700.Although this piece has light abrasions on its silver surfaces, it is brilliant with traces of gold toning, and it exhibits prooflike obverse and reverse fields.
