Description

Unreported 1878 VAM-40 Dollar
MS64 Deep Mirror Prooflike

1878 7/8TF $1 Strong MS64 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. VAM-40, R.5. The N and M of UNUM have broken bases, and this variety is considered one of the difficult 1878 doubled tailfeather varieties. This example is housed in an older green-label PCGS holder.
Here is a delightful doubled tailfeathers 1878 Morgan with seven tailfeathers over five tailfeathers, the change resulting from observations of bird lovers who stated that eagle's have an odd number of tailfeathers. This example has tips of five of the eight feathers from the first hub clearly visible.
While PCGS has no population data based on VAM varieties, it is worth noting that NGC has only certified 43 examples of this variety, including just five prooflike pieces. They have never certified a Deep Mirror Prooflike VAM-40 dollar. Population: 29 in 64 Deep Mirror Prooflike, 3 finer for all 1878 7/8 Tailfeather dollars (2/10).(Registry values: P5)
