Description
Enchanting Superb Gem 1878-CC Morgan Dollar
1878-CC $1 MS67 PCGS. After four Seated dollar issues and six years of Trade dollar strikings, this first Morgan dollar issue, with its healthy mintage of 2.2 million pieces, ushered in a new era of coinage for the Carson City Mint. The Morgan dollar would become inextricably linked to Carson City in numismatic lore, with the GSA sales in particular spurring collectors' imaginations. Unlike with a number of later issues, however, the 1878-CC did not receive much of a population boost from the GSA releases, with government holdings a distinct minority of examples coined. That said, a number of coins were paid out during the earlier Treasury releases. It is known that the 1878-CC dollar was paid out heavily, both within Nevada and elsewhere in the United States; Rusty Goe, in his The Mint on Carson Street, writes that " ... almost immediately bags of these new dollars were being shipped to out of state destinations." He further notes such far-flung ending-points as St. Louis, Cincinnati, and New Orleans; this last city, however, did not see much circulation of Carson City dollars after 1878, since O-mint Morgan dollars were struck in 1879.
This Superb Gem 1878-CC dollar is easily one of the finest representatives known, rating a (non-specific) mention in Goe. It is one of just four MS67 pieces certified by PCGS, with none finer (11/08). Shining and sharply struck silver-white centers yield to rich gold-orange in medium-thickness bands at the margins. Immensely appealing for this popular issue.
