1879-CC 'Capped Die' Dollar, AU53
VAM-3, Top 100, Guide Book Variety

1879-CC $1 Capped Die, VAM-3, AU53 PCGS. A Top 100 Variety. The story of the "Capped Die" variety is that a mint worker used the wrong Carson City mintmark punch, intended for smaller Seated denominations, into a working reverse die. The mistake was recognized, and the correct punch was then used. Small chips were made in the mintmark area to efface traces of the Small CC. A brilliant and partly lustrous example of the popular Guide Book variety. The left obverse is moderately abraded.
