Description

1879-CC Silver Dollar, MS62
Capped Die, VAM-3, Top 100

1879-CC $1 Capped Die, VAM-3, MS62 NGC. A Top 100 Variety. The 1879-CC ranks among the rarest Carson City issues of the Morgan dollar series. Decades ago, the Capped Die variety was lightly regarded by collectors, who preferred a clear mintmark. But in our more knowledgeable era, specialists know that VAM-3 is a Large Over Small CC mint blunder, and the myriad die chips near the mintmark are from an attempt to remove the initial Small CC impression. Both the Capped and Clear mintmark varieties are listed in the Guide Book, and the Capped Die is scarcer. This lustrous and brilliant representative has a good strike and scattered marks consistent with the grade.
