Description

1879-CC Silver Dollar
MS63 Deep Prooflike
VAM-3, 'Capped Die'

1879-CC $1 Capped Die, VAM-3, MS63 Deep Prooflike NGC. A Top 100 Variety. A generation ago, the Capped Die '79-CC was considered a "poor man's" 1879-CC and was deeply discounted over its "perfect mintmark" counterpart. The advent of population data has drastically changed the pricing structure for this rarer variety, and attitudes have followed, with the Capped Die coins now desired by the collecting community.

As usual, the central details on each side are somewhat softly defined, and the coin is brilliant throughout. The mirrored fields are dazzling and highly reflective with pleasing mint frost on the devices. Moderate grazes affect the left obverse and upper reverse fields, but little contact is seen elsewhere. A splendid, high grade example of this rare '79-CC variant. Census: 12 in 63 Deep Prooflike, 9 finer (11/18).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2009), lot 1011, which realized $6,325.
