Description

1879-CC Dollar, MS64 Deep Prooflike
The Capped Die Variety, VAM-3

1879-CC $1 Capped Die, VAM-3, MS64 Deep Prooflike NGC. A Top 100 Variety. The Large CC over Small CC feature is more visible on this example than some. The engraver's attempt to disguise the blundered mintmark is less noticeable thanks to the polished dies and the resultant prooflike fields. Many Morgan dollar collectors are uncertain whether to opt for a Capped Die example or choose the Normal Mintmark, often choosing one of each mintmark type.

Only minor softness exists on the central design elements for this near-Gem DPL coin. Brilliant silver surfaces show only tiny ticks and minimal abrasions. Sparkling mirrored fields contrast pleasing mint frost on the devices. Subtle signs of contact are nondistracting. this is an excellent, high-grade example of this rare '79-CC variant. NGC Census: 9 in 64 Deep Prooflike, 1 finer (3/25).
