'Capped Die' Overmintmark Variety
A Top 100 VAM Necessity
1879-CC $1 Capped Die, VAM-3, MS64 PCGS. CAC. A Top 100
Variety. In most grades, the price differential between the Normal
Mintmark variety and the overmintmarked (Capped Die) variant is of
little significance despite the fact that the Normal Mintmark coins
outnumber the overmintmarked examples by a factor of two to one or
more. One reason the Large CC over Small CC overmintmark does not
bring much of a premium except in high grades is the overmintmark
is disguised by disfiguring die work -- sometimes described as
resembling die rust -- obscuring the true nature of the classic
Mint error. This near-Gem Capped Die example is brilliant and
frosty. Lustrous surfaces show only distributed tiny marks and
slight central softness as usual above the ear and at the eagle's
breast feathering. CAC endorsement confirms high quality for the
assigned grade. PCGS reports only 19 numerically finer examples
plus 33 pieces in 64+ (1/26).From The Stoebner Family Collection.
