Description

1879-CC Silver Dollar, MS65
Rare Issue, Brilliant and Attractive
Large CC Mintmark Variety

1879-CC $1 MS65 NGC. Clear CC. One of the signs of a great collection is the quality of its 1879-CC dollar -- the rarest, early-date Carson City issue both by reputation and by fact. The Carson City Mint competed with the San Francisco Mint for silver bullion, and because of favorable railroad tariffs San Francisco was the preferred destination for newly-mined silver. As a result, just 756,000 silver dollars were produced at Carson City in 1879, while the San Francisco mintage was more than 9 million pieces.

This appealing, silver-white dollar is heavily frosted on Liberty's portrait and on the eagle. Frosty-brilliant fields surround the bold devices with cartwheel silver luster. The fields are clean and smooth, save for a few minor abrasions that define the Gem grade. A touch of softness in the hair strands is as much a function of the thick mint frost as it is from striking weakness. Just four pieces are graded numerically higher by the two services combined. Census: 40 in 65 (1 in 65+, 1 in 65 ), 2 finer (3/14).
