Description

1879-CC Morgan Dollar, MS65
Brilliant and Lustrous Example
Seldom Seen Finer

1879-CC $1 MS65 PCGS. VAM-5 The Carson City branch mint struck 756,000 Morgan dollars for its second issue in 1879. Typical for the region, the issue circulated in Nevada commerce, but it is also believed that a large portion was sent to storage and subsequently melted by the authority of the Pittman Act. Q. David Bowers writes in A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars, eighth edition, about the 1879-CC: "In the early 20th century, quantities of these dollars were sent to the San Francisco Mint for storage, and others went to the Treasury Building in Washington, D.C. At least several thousand were paid out by the latter depot in the early 1950s, one bag of 1,000 coins going via an intermediary to dealer Harry J. Forman. A bag from San Francisco went to someone in either Montana or Seattle." (This is the recollection of San Francisco dealer John Skubis, as told to Bowers).
The 1879-CC is a formidable rarity over MS65. PCGS reports only six pieces in Premium Gem with none finer, and we have handled only two coins at that grade since 2014 (3/26). The rich, frosty luster on the devices of this fully brilliant Gem cascades over the pristine surfaces into an impressive cartwheel effect. The devices are generally well-struck with only slight softness seen in the center, and trivial marks account for the grade. VAM-5 has a doubled 18 and a doubled profile, tripled stars and the left wreaths show doubling.(Registry values: P7, N4719)
