    1879-CC and 1879-CC Capped Die
PCGS Grading Sets, Poor 1 to MS64
48 Pieces, Many With CAC Seal

1879-CC and 1879-CC Capped Die 48-Piece Grading Set, Poor 1 to MS64 PCGS. A remarkable assemblage. Grading sets from Poor 1 to MS64 for both Guide Book varieties of the semikey 1879-CC silver dollar are present. Many of the dollars are endorsed by CAC. Both sets are housed together in a single custom mahogany-red wooden box with slotted blue velvet interior. The set was the subject for the article 1879-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Grading Set, published in the Spring 2012 issue of Curry's Chronicle, the journal of the Carson City Coin Collectors of America.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire a unique set that took seven years to assemble. The set was started in 2010, and completed in early 2018. The collector chose the third rarest date in the Carson City Morgan dollar series. In addition, the 1879-CC has two major varieties, the Normal mintmark and the Capped Die or Large Over Small CC, and found one for each of the 24 grades for both varieties. Rarely will a collector have an opportunity to view piece-by-piece the entire gamut of grades between Poor 1 and MS64 for a particular date and denomination.

The collector discovered that although the higher grade specimens are more expensive, it is the lower graded pieces that are much rarer in PCGS holders. A glance at the PCGS Population Report confirms this. For the Capped Die variety, there is only one piece in Poor 1 and a mere two examples in Fair 2. For the Normal mintmark variety, just four pieces are certified as Poor 1.

The total value of the 48 pieces is approximately $85,000, but the value of this special double grading set undoubtedly exceeds their combined individual value, given the effort and degree of difficulty that went into its assemblage.

The Capped Die is a Top 100 Variety and is found either as VAM-3A with two linear die gouges near the first A in AMERICA, or as VAM-3 without those die gouges. The Capped Die variety becomes more difficult to attribute in lower grades, but one pick-up point is the 18 in the date, which is strongly repunched north. The G in God is filled in later die states.

The regular 1879-CC grading set consists of Poor 1; Fair 2; AG3 CAC; Good 4 CAC; Good 6 CAC; VG8 CAC; VG10 CAC; Fine 12, a VAM-3 Capped Die example though undesignated as such; Fine 15; VF20 CAC; VF25; VF30; VF35, VAM-2B; XF40; XF45 CAC, VAM-2A; AU50, VAM-1; AU53, VAM-2B; AU55, VAM-1; AU58 CAC, unlisted VAM; MS60, same unlisted VAM as the AU58, semiprooflike, light golden patina near the rims; MS61, VAM-4, brilliant and moderately prooflike; MS62+, VAM-4, lightly toned, moderate facial grazes; MS63 CAC, VAM-4, semiprooflike, exceptionally clean fields; and a MS64, VAM-4, dusky silver-gray bag toning in the field near the forehead, a well-preserved reverse.

    The 1879-CC Capped Die grading set includes: Poor 1 CAC; Fair 2, VAM-3; AG3, VAM-3; Good 4, VAM-3; Good 6, VAM-3; VG8 CAC, VAM-3; VG10, VAM-3; Fine 12, VAM-3; Fine 15 CAC, VAM-3; VF20, VAM-3; VF25 CAC, VAM-3; VF30 CAC, VAM-3; VF35 CAC, VAM-3; XF40 CAC, VAM-3; XF45, VAM-3; AU50, VAM-3; AU53, VAM-3; AU55, VAM-3A; AU58, VAM-3; MS60, VAM-3A, lustrous and lightly toned with the expected number of minor marks; MS61, VAM-3A, rich orange-red toning about the margins; MS62 CAC, VAM-3A, obverse glimpses of pale tan toning; MS63 CAC, VAM-3, light tan toning near the tailfeathers, high-end for the grade; and a MS64 Secure, VAM-3, a smooth obverse field, light ice-blue and straw-gold toning.
