Description

1879-S Morgan Dollar, MS68
None Certified Finer

1879-S $1 MS68 NGC. This Superb Gem is the more-common Reverse of 1879 variety. For more than 60 years, most 1879-S dollars sat in storage at "the Granite Lady" (the San Francisco Mint). Massive releases in the early 1940s and 1960s increased the availability of high-grade pieces, but few can match the aesthetic appeal of this brilliant dollar. A Superb Gem in every way, the reflective fields emphasize fully struck, frosted devices. A mere hint of almond tone at the upper obverse rim and a single light abrasion in the left obverse field are the only signs of its dormancy in a cloth bag. Otherwise, the coin is as fresh as the day it was struck. Neither service has certified a numerically finer example (3/14).
