Description

1880-S Silver Dollar, MS68 Prooflike
Just One Finer at PCGS or NGC

1880-S $1 MS68 Prooflike NGC. A highly desired San Francisco date in the finest grades because of its relative availability in Superb Gem or finer Mint State, but the issue is considerably scarcer with prooflike surfaces at the highest levels. This attractive example displays blaze of orange-gold toning that covers half of the portrait and all of the right obverse field. A ring of golden rim toning frames the brilliant-white reverse. The usual sharp strike attends the motifs, and the fully prooflike fields show only a few light marks. No 1880-S is numerically finer at NGC in prooflike, and just one coin is graded higher at PCGS in the format. Census: 9 in 68 (1 in 68 ) Prooflike, 0 finer (2/15).(Registry values: P1, N1793)
