Description
1881-CC Morgan Dollar, MS67+
Lustrous Branch Mint Piece, CAC
1881-CC $1 MS67+ PCGS. CAC. VAM-2. Both 8s are slightly
doubled and have tiny die chips within their upper loops, the top
of the reverse is doubled, and the CC mintmark tilts to the left.
The Carson City branch mint expected increased Morgan production in
1881 as the bullion shortage plaguing the prior two issues had been
resolved. But a scandal involving branch mint personnel resulted in
a six month suspension of coining operations, limiting production
of the 1881-CC to just 296,000 Morgan dollars.Although the stage was set for the issue to become a major rarity, almost half of the mintage saw little or no circulation and was eventually released in GSA sales in the 1970s. Plentiful through Premium Gem, the 1881-CC becomes challenging in Superb Gem, and finer pieces are decidedly rare. This Plus-graded Superb Gem exhibits razor-sharp details on rich, frosty luster that propels an exceptional cartwheel effect. Typical Nevada coins display moderate-to-heavy bagmarks, but the surfaces of this fully brilliant example are virtually unabraded. CAC endorsed, and PCGS reports only five numerically finer examples (1/26).
