Description

1882-O Silver Dollar, MS67
Just One Certified Finer

1882-O $1 MS67 NGC. One of the better-produced and more common New Orleans issues in the series, where much of the mintage of 6 million pieces was safely tucked away in bags until the early 1960s, and provided many examples through grades MS64. Any finer and the issue is scarce, with true MS65 examples few an far between. Superb Gem coins are almost never seen, and they are highly prized by both Morgan dollar and type collectors.

The current example is certainly one of the finest extant, with a beautiful, full strike and gleaming silver luster. The coin is without any meaningful marks, and just a couple of tiny abrasions serve as hallmarks for future identification. The bold detail of this coin suggests an early strike from the dies, which will be of interest to variety collectors, since the O mintmark reveals an anomaly within the space of the O, perhaps the ghostly image of the diagonal center of an S, typical of the earliest die state of the VAM-4 overmintmark variety. Just one example of the 1882-O dollar is certified finer, a single MS68 by PCGS. NGC Census: 2 in 67, 0 finer (3/14).
