1882-O/S $1 MS64 PCGS. VAM-4. A Top 100 Variety. The
recessed O over S variety is one of three overmintmark varieties
known for this issue. There must have been an emergency order for
reverse dies from New Orleans. If the Philadelphia Mint had already
marked the dies for San Francisco, they would have overpunched the
mintmark with an O and sent them to Louisiana. This satiny Mint
State example has pale champagne toning over lustrous silver
surfaces. PCGS has only certified two finer examples
(4/10).(Registry values: P5, N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 254D, PCGS# 7138, GSID# 7513)
