    1882-O/S Silver Dollar, MS65
VAM-5 'Broken' Variety, Late Die State

1882-O/S $1 O/S Broken, VAM-5, MS65 PCGS. A Top 100 Variety. The VAM varieties in their current form are a tremendous help in clearing up the mysteries surrounding this important Guide Book variety. There were three different, re-purposed New Orleans dies (originally prepared for the San Francisco Mint), resulting in the overmintmark varieties. VAM-3 is the "Flush" variety, with curvature of the S most visible in Late Die States. VAM-4 is the "Recessed" variety, with the curvature of the S deeper in the recess of the O and lower, also most-visible in Late Die States. VAM-5 is the "Broken" S variety, with a partial S visible in Late Die States.

PCGS holders often designate Strong or Weak for the 1882 O/S variety. The designation does not relate to the quality of strike, but rather to the visibility of the overmintmark. The "Strong" designation usually applies to VAM-3 and VAM-4 Late Die States, where the curvature of the S is most visible within the O. The "Weak" designation usually applies to the VAM-5 Late Die State, with a partial S showing. It is possible Early Die States from all three VAM varieties are sometimes labeled "Weak" by PCGS, since they show lesser-presence of the S within the O.

Any O/S variety is rare in the Gem Mint State condition of this example. It is the VAM-5 Broken S variety, a Late Die State, with the partial S clearly visible. Brilliant and untoned, the coin shows few abrasions or marks of any kind on the smooth, appealing surfaces. This fully struck VAM-5 O/S is rare and desirable in Gem condition, and highly attractive. Population: 2 in 65, 0 finer (8/14).
