Description

1883-CC Morgan Dollar, MS68
Among the Few Finest Graded

1883-CC $1 MS68 PCGS. VAM-3. The diagnostic for this VAM variety is the small dash remaining under the second 8. There was an earlier state for these dies, VAM-3A, of which some evidence still shows on this piece: remnants of die clashing in a V shape under Liberty's neck, and some remaining bits of the "clashed ST" (from TRUST on the reverse), but these latter have been largely polished off the dies. There is also a diagnostic dot on the upper-right loop of the first 8 for this variety, visible here.

The 1883-CC Morgan dollar is a common issue among the Carson City dates, a trait attributed to its survival in copious numbers in the historic General Services Administration sales of decades ago. Q. David Bowers' Guide Book of Morgan Dollars pegs the survivors of the original production of 1,204,000 pieces at more than 755,000 coins in a GSA inventory -- about 73% of the total made.

The 1883-CC joins its siblings, the 1882-CC and 1884-CC issues, as the three most-common Carson City dates in those GSA sales. The typical 1883-CC coin is well-struck with good luster, usually untoned or lightly toned, and most average in the MS63-MS64 range. The present coin is among only six grading events seen at PCGS to date (and we are sure that several of those are for the same coin, the Battle Born example), and there are none finer at either service. NGC reports two examples in MS68 (9/20). This piece displays almost miraculous preservation, given the decades of bag storage that the great majority of survivors likely endured. Only the most trivial evidence of coin-to-coin contact appears on Liberty's face. The silvery surfaces are flashy and virtually untoned, save for a touch of gold around the obverse rim. The strike is full throughout, and the reverse shows surfaces that are nearly unmarked. Some typical die clashing is visible on the right reverse by the eagle's wing.

For the finest Registry Set, this piece should see extremely spirited bidding among the many lovers of untoned, completely original Morgan dollars.(Registry values: P2, N4719)
