Description

Extraordinary MS68 1883-CC Dollar

1883-CC $1 MS68 PCGS. A gleaming, snowy-white Superb Gem with peerless fields and a creamy-smooth portrait. The appearance of an MS68 Morgan is always cause for excitement among enthusiasts of this popular series. Add to the equation the presence of a CC mintmark and widespread interest soon follows. Over the years we have offered dozens of 1883-CC dollars at the MS67 level, but only a single MS68 has previously appeared in a Heritage auction. That piece is the same as the present coin, and it realized $46,000 in our 2006 FUN Signature. Once it has been sold, years may pass before its equal again emerges in the marketplace.
According to Q. David Bowers, the Federal government stopped paying out silver dollars in March 1964, although more than a million pieces remained in Treasury holdings. These were inventoried, and it turned out that many of these were Uncirculated 1883-CC examples. Those pieces were eventually dispersed in a series of GSA auctions, held between October 1972 and February 1980. Today, if a GSA dollar is sighted on the bourse floor, the chances are it will be a Carson City issue struck between 1882 and 1884. Over the past twenty years, most high grade GSA dollars were broken out of their holders and submitted to PCGS and NGC. Examples through the MS65 grade are plentiful, although always in demand as a souvenir of the legendary Western branch mint. In MS66, the issue becomes scarce relative to its formidable demand, and MS67 examples are seldom encountered. The appearance of an MS68 provides a major opportunity to those who will not settle for less than the finest obtainable quality. Population: 3 in 68, 0 finer (7/07).
