Description

Near-Gem 1883-S Morgan Dollar

1883-S $1 MS64 PCGS. In spite of its mintage of 6.2 million pieces, the 1883-S Morgan dollar is a difficult coin to locate, especially in Mint State. The present coin is an attractive MS64 specimen, Q. David Bowers' recommended Optimal Collecting Grade. Only 36 coins have been certified in higher grades by NGC and PCGS combined, as of (10/09). Sharply struck and attractively toned in peripheral shades of lilac and green, a few shallow handling marks on Liberty's cheek probably prevent a higher grade.(Registry values: P7, N2998)
