Description

Magnificent 1883-S Dollar, MS66

1883-S $1 MS66 PCGS. Ex: Wayne Miller/Jack Lee. The 1883-S dollar, sporting a mintage of 6,250,000 pieces, is readily available in circulated grades, as well as through the lower Mint State levels of MS60 to MS63. Inspection of PCGS/NGC population figures indicate that the 1883-S population decreases at the near-Gem level, and Gems become challenging, with approximately 30 certified examples. The two services have seen just four Premium Gems, two MS67s, and none finer. Moreover, bagmarks are a significant problem with this issue, as indicated by David Bowers in A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars, where he says: "These must have been stored and handled roughly."
The Premium Gem that we offer here reveals a few unobtrusive luster grazes, but these are certainly not "significant," and they fail to negate this coin's magnificent eye appeal. Soft purple patination is visible around the right and lower obverse margins, and nearly imperceptible hints of multicolored hues cling to the right reverse margin. Semiprooflike characteristics are noted in the fields, that in turn highlight the devices. A well executed strike manifests itself in strong definition on the design elements, including the hair over Liberty's ear and the eagle's breast feathers.
This is the plate coin for the 1883-S discussion in Wayne Miller's 1982 The Morgan and Peace Dollar Textbook. Population: 2 in 66, 1 finer (11/08).
