Elusive MS62 1884-S Morgan Dollar
With Satiny Silver-White Surfaces
1884-S $1 MS62 PCGS. While the 1883-S Morgan dollar is much
more difficult than its several S-mint predecessors, the 1884-S is
the first real showstopper of the series in Mint State grades. The
1884-S is a common coin in circulated grades, but most examples of
the issue appear to have circulated. Many more were possibly melted
under the terms of the 1918 Pittman Act. This MS62 specimen shows
consistent, satiny silver-white surfaces that lack any suggestion
of toning and have much more eye appeal than the numeric grade
implies. A couple of small contact marks on Liberty's cheek
preclude an even finer grade, but the strike is bold overall, save
for the usual area over the ear. The reverse also displays a few
grade-consistent ticks on the eagle's breast, yet the overall
appearance is quite high-end. Population: 93 in 62, 52 finer
