1884-S Silver Dollar, MS63
Conditionally Scarce Issue

1884-S $1 MS63 NGC. VAM-4B. The introduction of the Morgan dollar series in 1878 utilized facilities in Philadelphia, San Francisco and Carson City to fulfill the substantial requirements of the Bland-Allison Act. New Orleans was engaged the following year, and in 1882 the Mint shifted most of the gold production to San Francisco, as gold was geographically more available there. Morgan production out of the West dropped steeply each year through 1886, and the 1884-S realized a mintage of only 3.2 million coins. Typical for S-Mint issues of the era, the 1884-S was heavily circulated and is common in well-circulated grades. The low mintage, however, has left Uncirculated examples of the 1884-S quite challenging.
Like any true Mint State piece, this Select example is fully lustrous and free of excess contact. The surfaces are essentially untoned save for faint hues of champagne-silver on the rims. The cartwheel effect is outstanding, as is the overall eye appeal. Only a few superficial, unobtrusive marks limit the grade. VAM-4B has a far date and shows a die chip on the left side of the left wreath. NGC reports only 16 numerically finer pieces in non-Prooflike grades (3/26).
