    1884-S Morgan Dollar, MS63
    Challenging Issue in High Grade

1884-S $1 MS63 NGC. Morgan dollar production declined at the San Francisco Mint in 1884, to 3.2 million pieces, a fairly modest mintage in the context of the series. Some of the coins were released into circulation, making the issue easy to locate in circulated grades today. However, most of the coins held in government storage were melted under the provisions of the Pittman Act in 1918. The 1884-S was not well-represented in the Treasury releases of the 1960s and the issue is elusive in all Mint State grades.

The present coin is an attractive Select specimen with sharply detailed design elements and lightly marked surfaces. Pleasing shades of lavender-gray toning blanket both sides, with a few highlights of pale gold. Vibrant mint luster shines through the patina. Census: 46 in 63, 15 finer (2/19).(Registry values: P9, N7079)
