    1884-S Morgan Silver Dollar, MS64
    Only Three Finer NGC Coins

1884-S $1 MS64 NGC. An important condition rarity in the Morgan silver dollar series, the 1884-S enjoyed a mintage of 3.2 million coins, but many of those pieces entered circulation at or soon after they were minted. Others were stored in government vaults, entering circulation over the following few decades. Dave Bowers writes in A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars: "Some coins remained in Treasury control, and multiple bags were distributed from San Francisco Mint storage in 1926, attracting little notice at the time, and passing into circulation." There were no significant quantities remaining for the Treasury release of the early 1960s. As a result, the typical example is a mid-grade circulated coin, and even AU examples are seldom seen. Mint State pieces are, of course, major rarities at all grade levels.
This Choice Mint State example is one of the finest we have handled. A review of our Permanent Auction Archives, covering all of our sales since 1993, shows a single MS65 NGC coin that we sold in January 2009, and seven appearances in MS64, including 1995, 1997, 2001, 2004 (2), 2005, and 2007. Opportunities to acquire such a fine example are nearly as rare as the actual coins.
This specimen is sensational for the grade, with satin luster on both sides. A couple nicks on the cheek and a small graze in the left obverse field are all that prevent a finer grade. The reverse is substantially nicer. The surfaces are untoned, save for a splash of light gold at the bust point. With a combined NGC and PCGS population of only 22 examples in MS64, and just six finer coins, few collectors will be able to own such a remarkable coin. Census: 10 in 64, 3 finer (4/11).(Registry values: P9, N7079) (NGC ID# 254P, PCGS# 7156)
