1884-S Near-Gem Dollar
A Pleasing Condition Rarity

1884-S $1 MS64 PCGS. It is generally thought among numismatists that the vast majority of the 3.2 million Morgan dollars produced at the San Francisco Mint in 1884 were released into the channels of commerce. Consequently, worn examples are relatively plentiful today and are available for a nominal price. PCGS and NGC combined have certified several thousand pieces in circulated grades, especially from the Very Fine to About Uncirculated levels of preservation. Relatively few Mint State coins were saved, resulting in them being both highly prized and highly priced today, even in the lower Uncirculated grades. The two services have seen a total of about 600 Mint State examples of this date, the vast majority falling in the MS60 to MS62 range. The certified population drops significantly at the Select level and again in near-Gem. To date, only 22 coins have been designated MS64 and a mere six specimens finer.
The present near-Gem offering is awash with bright luster, and appears at first glance to be untoned. Close inspection, however, reveals just the barest hints of tan-gold color at some of the margins. Some prooflikeness is visible in the fields, especially those on the reverse. The design features are well struck, showing partial definition in the hair at Liberty's ear and the eagle's breast feathers. Both sides are well preserved, revealing just a faint graze or two. Overall eye appeal is very pleasing on this condition rarity representative. Population: 12 in 64, 3 finer (11/11).(Registry values: P9, N7079)
