Description

Gorgeously Toned 1884 Silver Dollar, MS 67 PCGS

1884 $1 MS 67 PCGS. Ex: Jack Lee. A readily obtainable P-mint delivery in lower grades, the 1884 withholds its rarity until one crosses the Superb Gem threshold. NGC and PCGS have bestowed an MS 67 designation on only 17 survivors of this issue, and there is not a single coin graded higher (7/00). Although fully frosted and smooth in all areas, this coin's most appealing feature is the multicolored bag toning that blankets the obverse. Vivid gold, orange, crimson, and powder-blue colors compete for dominance over Liberty's portrait and near the peripheries. There is also a whisper of golden iridescence near the upper left reverse rim. Sharply struck, this coin is among the more visually stunning 1884 dollars that this cataloger has seen. In addition, this coin was the first 1884 Morgan dollar to receive an MS 67 grade from PCGS in 1987. At that time, it was only the second P-mint example graded MS 67 after an 1886.
Ex: Jack Guaya Collection; acquired by George Bodway in 1987 from dealer Bill Spears; George Bodway Collection (Superior, 6/88); PCGS Tour (1990).
From the Gregg Bingham NFL Collection.
